THE BATTLE TO BECOME YOU
April Author Update by Troy Hooker
Fireside Greeting
Hey fellow adventurers,
I’m excited to share that I’ll be attending the Great Homeschool Convention in Cincinnati, April 9–11!
Descendant Publishing will be there with some really fun giveaways, and I’ll also be giving away a paperback copy of my newest Demon Tide book. If you’re planning to attend, I’d love for you to stop by, say hello, and step into the world of epic, hope-filled adventure with us.
There’s something special about connecting with families in person. Talking stories, sharing ideas, and seeing readers discover new worlds for the first time. If you’re coming, be sure to find me at the Descendant Publishing booth!
The Battle To Become You
I wanted to talk quickly about what it means to be you. The real, authentic, you.
It’s the kind of battle not fought on a traditional battlefield. It’s not fought with swords or monsters, but with something just as dangerous.
The pressure to become someone you were never meant to be.
The world has a way of shaping expectations around us. And I admit, personally, I feel the pressure to conform nearly every day. Over time, those expectations can begin to feel like truth. We’re told to be louder, stronger, more impressive, more like someone else. And if we’re not careful, we slowly trade what is true for what is expected, until we’re no longer sure where one ends and the other begins. But God does not call us to imitation. He calls us to faithfulness.
When David stepped onto the field to face Goliath, he was offered the armor of a king. It looked right. It made sense. It was what a warrior was supposed to wear. But it wasn’t his. The weight of it slowed him down, and in trying to become something he wasn’t, he risked losing what made him effective in the first place. So he set it aside.
David didn’t win that battle by becoming someone else. He won it by stepping forward as he was—called, chosen, and equipped in a way that didn’t look impressive to the world, but was exactly what God intended.
There is a deep freedom in that truth:
You don’t have to become someone else to be strong.
You don’t have to perform to have purpose.
The darkness often works through distortion, imitation. It whispers that who you are is not enough, that you need to adjust, reshape, or hide parts of yourself to belong or to be effective. It thrives in comparison and confusion, slowly pulling you away from the identity God has already given you. But the Light does something different.
The Light reveals what is real. It restores what has been worn down. It reminds you that your identity was never meant to be self-made.
You were created on purpose, with intention, and with a role that no one else can fulfill in quite the same way. And while that path may not always look like what the world expects, it is exactly where God’s strength meets your obedience.
Maybe one of the bravest things you can do is to step forward as you are. Walk in what is true, even if that truth isn’t what you’d hoped it would look like.
Then, trust that the One who made you knows exactly what He’s doing.
Ephesians 2:8-10
Reflection
Family Question
David was offered armor that looked right, but wasn’t meant for him.
- Have you ever felt pressure to be like someone else in order to fit in or succeed?
- Why do you think it can be hard to trust who God made you to be?
Personal Reflection
Take a moment to consider where you might be wearing “someone else’s armor.”
- Is there an area in your life where you feel like you’re performing, comparing, or trying to meet expectations that don’t truly fit who God created you to be?
- What would it look like to set that aside and walk forward as you are: honest, known, and fully dependent on Him?
Dive Deeper
The battle for authenticity is often quiet, but it is constant. The enemy doesn’t always attack with fear alone. Sometimes he distracts with comparison, insecurity, or the feeling that you are “not enough” unless you become someone else.
As you reflect, consider:
- What voices influence how you see yourself the most right now?
- Do those voices point you toward truth… or toward pressure and comparison?
- How does Scripture define your identity differently than the world does? (Ephesians 2:8-10)
- What is one practical step you can take this week to walk more confidently in who God made you to be?
Maybe you don’t need different armor. Maybe you need to walk faithfully in what has already been given.
Creative Connection
Imagine you are a warrior preparing for a mission, but instead of choosing the strongest or most impressive gear, you must choose what actually fits you.
Take a few minutes to create your own “authentic armor”:
- Your Strength: What is something God has uniquely placed in you?
- Your Weakness: Where do you need to rely on Him more?
- Your Weapon: What truth helps you fight discouragement or doubt?
- Your Calling: What kind of battles do you feel drawn to fight?
- Your Allies: What weak areas can you give to someone else to help you fight? Who would you trust to be your ally?
You can write this out, draw it, or build it into your own character. The goal isn’t to become the strongest version of someone else. It’s to become who you were created to be, and to walk forward with courage, even when it feels different.
